How did the Elliot Brown Bravery watch project come about?
Elliot Brown make watches that work just as well over a wetsuit as they do under the cuff of a shirt. The founders Ian Elliot and Alex Brown learned their trade making sports watches at action sports brand Animal and Elliot Brown watches have won multiple awards and industry accolades.
Customers include explorers, adventurers, TV personalities, extreme athletes, Clipper Round the World Yacht Race crews, Mountain Rescue England and Wales, and the military. Their watches have broken records and survived in the toughest conditions.
This special edition watch came about as a result of Elliot Brown’s close relationship with the SBSA and the essential support network they provide.
We were lucky enough to meet Toby in 2016 and naturally hit it off with the conversation spinning off into all kinds of creative directions – one of which was the idea of a special edition Bravery watch.
We had to make it happen.
We loved the colours Toby has created within his best selling clothing and agreed we needed to create a watch that would carry that distinctive identity – the kind of watch you wear and instantly recognize as being a part of Bravery and what it stands for. If you know you know.
Roll on to 2018 and this is the result, it’s based on Elliot Brown’s best selling Canford supercompressor.
Elliot Brown watches are built from the ground up with a host of largely invisible yet highly functional details, every one built for duty. In fact Elliot Brown’s watches are so tough, they have been selected to make a special forces military “issued” watch in addition to many projects they are invited to work on like those with Mountain Rescue teams or the Clipper Round the World sailors.
Constructed entirely from 316 stainless with toughened glass, the Swiss quartz movement is secured inside a shock absorbing steel housing, every watch is tested in water at 200m and comes with two premium straps. You can choose orange plus black rubber straps or orange and black leather that includes a neat folding deployant clasp.
Strap bars are unbreakable, made from solid stainless and screw into place, buckles are solid stainless, rubber is supple and strong and will shrug off extremes, the top crown operates a smooth inner rotating timing bezel. The detailing is exquisite even down to the case back which is beautifully engraved with the Bravery trademark.
To give you an idea of the detail Elliot Brown go to, the case back is polished, etched, bead blasted engraved with multiple surfaces that reduce the contact patch for comfort in warmer conditions. It bolts down creating a perfect seal with no risk of damaging the seals so often associated with screw down case backs, the hex bolts inset into the chamfered edge have no sharp edges and guarantee the logo is always straight.
The crowns are solid 6mm with aggressive knurling for great grip and are triple sealed to provide total water resistance even when in the out or adjust position. The Ronda 715 Swiss three hand date movement is selected for it’s reliability but also has a very useful indicator causing the seconds hand to jump when the battery is beginning to run low (typically lasting three years). Even the date window is custom printed to match the dial perfectly and with the crowns positioned at 2 and 4 o’clock they are nicely unobtrusive.
The gunmetal finish is vapour blasted for a gorgeous anti reflective finish and provides the perfect contrast for the bright detailing. The tough 15μm matte PVD coating takes 24 hours to apply and impregnates the surface of the metal. It’s twice the thickness of the industry standard coating.
The rubber straps were developed by Elliot Brown over the course of 12 months with breather lines cut into the back in the shape of contour lines from Tyneham Cap. One of the highest points on Dorset’s Jurassic World Heritage coastline and just along from Kimmeridge bay where the founders enjoy the water on all manner of boards and watercraft.
These watches are only available in limited numbers and only from our site so please be quick –once they’re gone it’ll be some months before we’ll have any more.
